From the 5DP – April 2018

#1 5DP Educator Showcase- Looking for Posters!

We are seeking individuals or teams to create poster “story boards” to share at the poster reception. The posters can:

Highlight a program or activity the school is proud of (academic or not), like a “brag board.”
Recognize educator accomplishments, like a “shout out” board.
Share a problem the school is working to solve that’s important to students, parents, and/or educators.
Demonstrate how you are doing or using something in a creative, out-of-the-box way (recess, technology, partnering with an organization in the community–the sky’s the limit!).
A story board may highlight one thing more in-depth or display multiple programs happening in less detail.

We have trifold boards for anyone who needs one. Please RSVP to reserve a spot at the reception for your poster.

#2- Free Summer Science Writing Courses with WriteBoston
We are really excited to host two Science and Literacy Courses with WriteBoston this summer. We held a similar course in the summer of 2015 and it was very popular. In the WriteBoston Science and Literacy Institute, you will learn how to teach science effectively by incorporating disciplinary literacies (writing, talking, listening and reading) into your classroom in ways that are authentic to scientific study. Teachers will engage in scientific explorations and questions that demand these communication skills; use literacies particular to science such as precise vocabulary, conventions of scientific argument, and the structures and features of scientific texts; and, increase their confidence and capacity to teach science through purposeful literacy practice.

Teachers will have time to apply what they learn to their own planning during work time each afternoon. They will also leave the course with materials for three different investigations, links to access all handouts and resources, and an array of literacy strategies they can use in their classrooms immediately.
