Five Things From the 5DP

January 2019

#1 5DP EDCamp- Sign up TODAY!

The RSVPs are rolling in an we are collecting great raffle prizes! Don’t miss this unique opportunity.

EdCamp 5DP will take place on Saturday, February 2nd, 2019 at Malden High School from 8:30am-12:30pm.
This fantastic, free morning of professional development is lead by teachers and volunteers from across the Five District Partnership, 5DP, from varying areas of interest in education.

An EdCamp is a workshop setting designed specifically for teachers and their professional development needs. Unlike traditional conferences which have schedules set months in advance, an EdCamp has an agenda of topics that is created by the participants through a facilitated session at the start of the event. You and other participants will create a set of sessions that meet your needs and interests. This is an open forum for discussions on a wide range of topics within K-12 education, and we hope that you will leave inspired, empowered, and connected to new colleagues!

Built on principles of connected and participatory learning, EdCamp 5DP strives to bring teachers together to talk about the things that matter most to them: their interests, passions, and questions. EdCamp is based on the principle that participants can facilitate sessions on topics of interest, the assumption that the experts are already in the room, and that all can work together to build understanding by sharing their own knowledge and questions.

Teachers who attend will receive 4 PDPs. Check-in starts at 8:00am. Click HERE to register!

#3-5DP Educator Showcase- Advisory Committee

We are searching for a few good teachers to serve on our Educator Showcase Advisory Committee. We will be hosting our 3rd annual Educator Showcase on May 30th 2019 and would like to have a small group of teachers advise us on the event. It is important to us to have teacher input on this event and to get your support in promoting it within your schools and districts. You will receive 15 PDPs for participating. We will have 1-2 in person meetings, some virtual time, and you would attend the event. If you are interested please contact me, Cove Davis at cdavis@chelseama.gov.

#4 Opportunities for Teachers

The Teacher Collaborative is offering several really interesting opportunities for teacher this winter.

  1. Opportunity Myth events: Are you familiar with the Opportunity Myth report that TNTP published this fall? It’s their latest national report and the main idea is that their nationwide research showed that by and large students are not being given grade-level assignments or expectations, which sets them up for failure in the post K-12 world. The reasons for this are manifold and there are lots of levers within the overall system that could be pulled to make improvements. Anyway, the paper is getting a lot of traction in the funder/policymaker world…but not so much where it counts: schools and classrooms. So we are organizing two events for educators (free and open to any/all) to come together to learn about and discuss the research and to generate ideas from the educator perspective about the types of supports teachers need, especially when it comes to students who enter their classrooms with learning gaps. Details are here: https://www.theteachercollaborative.org/events/
  2. Co-Labs for Innovation:  We also have 2 new Co-Labs running this winter/spring. These are cross-school inquiry groups that meet for 8 sessions over 12 weeks. It’s highly personalized PD that gets rave reviews from participants. We can offer PDPs or talk to you about how to work within BPS’s PD guidelines if that’s of interest. The topics will be: parent & family engagement and student voice & agency. Details here: https://www.theteachercollaborative.org/colabs
  3. Educator Exchange Dinner Edition: We are expanding on our monthly Educator Exchange events to include a smaller, more intimate dinner option where educators can have dinner with 2 local experts and go more in-depth on a particular topic. Dates and topics are listed on our events page: https://www.theteachercollaborative.org/events/
